The Valpolicella
The Valpolicella is situated to the north of Verona, west of Lake Garda and to the east and north of the Lessinia mountains. From the point of view of its geography, morphology and vegetation, it can be subdivided into three distinct areas: the mountains, hills and upper valley.
The mountainous calcareous area dating back to the Cretaceous period is made up of the Lessinia mountains and is covered by meadows, pasture and ash and fir woods. The hilly area, which is where most the vines and vineyards belonging to our firm are to be found, is made up of the southern offshoots of the mountains, which separate the three different valleys with three relatively long ridges. On the slopes of these hills the vineyards are found, climbing up the sides and terraces, often contained by dry stone walls (known as 'marogne') and by embankments, at an altitude of up to 500 metres. From the geological point of view cretaceous and eocene limestone dominates, with layers of basalt.
The landscape is characterized by olive and cherry trees, in addition to the vines, often interrupted by the presence of tall cypresses. The valleys are formed by the alluvial soil of the River Adige and the streams which come down from the individual valleys. As well as vines, the cultivation of various seed plants, vegetables and orchards, particularly of cherry and peach trees, is widespread. The climate of the Valpolicella area is generally very mild and gentle, with relatively regular rainfall. The only problem for the cultivation of vines is represented by hailstones, which tend to form quite often in summer, due to the crossing of the warm currents coming from Lake Garda and cold currents coming from Monte Baldo (2500 metres)
The production regulation subdivides the Valpolicella in to three distinct zones: the "classica" zone, the "Valpantena" zone and the "east Verona" zone (with includes the Squaranto valley, the Tramigna valley and the valley of Illasi).
The Valpolicella Classica area, where our winery and part of vineyards are found, is made up of the three valleys of Negrar, Marano and Fumane, each offering wines with their own particular characteristics. The valley of Negrar offers elegant wines, of great body, fruity, with excellent potential for ageing; the valley of Marano, given the location of the vineyards at altitudes of four hundred metres, produces wines of high quality above all in warmer years. The elegance and aromatic intensity are also a constant characteristic. Finally, the valley of Fumane produces wines with a slight sugary residue, soft and of medium duration in the area close to the village, whereas in the area further south (where the valley encounters the towns of Sant'Ambrogio and Gargagnago), particularly typical wines are produced, with limited acidity, and excellent body and which keep well over time.
Tradition has it that the best Recioto comes from vineyards facing east, whereas slopes facing west are in theory more suitable for producing the best Amarone.
